Today I want to talk to you about messaging.
What is messaging? It’s how you answer the question: So what do you do?
I have found that most people don’t really know how to answer this in a clear and concise way. Hell, I’ve been there myself. It’s like a deer caught in the headlights. Your brain instantly fills with all the things you do as an entrepreneur: writer, designer, consultant, coach, social media strategist, marketing specialist – just to name a couple.
So I get it.
It’s hard to narrow it down everything you do to just a word or two that’s easy for the person who is asking, to understand.
But if you can’t figure out who you are and what you do, imagine how difficult it is for your potential clients to know who you are and what you can do for them. And what about how your existing or past customers refer you to other friends? What do they say?
See how confusing this domino game can be?
So here’s my suggestion: Find somebody who you trust and who knows you, and ask them what you do. Simple.
When I asked I got: “Designer and Startup Consultant”.
Yep. Pretty much sums it up. Takes all the clutter away.
Yes, I know that there is more to what I do than those two very broad and simple terms, but after I give that simple overview of who I am, if they’re still listening and interested to know more, I can continue on with the details that set me apart and why I do what I do.
So… Who are you and what do you do?
*Exercise and additional info: Define what you do in 2-3 words (not sentences). You’re NOT looking to create a slogan, you simply want to finish the sentence: “I am a _______.”
